    April 16, 2024

As we move toward the last day of normal operations on May 31, 2024, we want to keep you updated on what we are doing to take care of our people, look after our property, and plan a schedule of meaningful closing events.

This is the first of the weekly updates you can expect between now and May 31. This content will also be posted on the BSC website; look for “Weekly Update” on the menu (left on desktop; right on mobile devices).

    People First

On April 5, students had the opportunity to visit with representatives from 67 colleges and universities at our transfer fair. Many of those institutions have formal teach-out agreements; most are offering transfer options for the ~400 students needing to complete their education.

The Provost’s Office is working closely with a group of students needing just a few credits to complete their BSC degrees. Between our online summer school session and partner institutions, most will be able to finish this summer. Those who wish to walk at commencement will be able to do so.

BSC hosted a career fair for faculty, staff, and graduating seniors on April 10, with 50+ companies represented. We are also offering two webinars for faculty and staff this week: One focused on pivoting in and out of academia, and the other on how to use LinkedIn and other social media to boost your job search.

As of today, 70 faculty and 117 staff are still looking for their next jobs. If you or your company are hiring, please let us know here, as we have a jobs board for our employees and are adding new opportunities daily.

    Next: Property

We’ve received plenty of inquiries from alumni and others asking about specific items they’d like to have, some with sentimental value, others with actual value. Right now, we must assume that everything belongs to our creditors until our financial obligations are met.

In some ways, the wind-down is like probating an estate after someone passes away. Assets must be inventoried, valued, and possibly sold to settle any debts before distributions can be made to heirs or beneficiaries and the estate finally closed. If you’ve experienced that, then you know the process can take months or even years.

In BSC’s case, we must do the same: Meet our obligations before distributing anything of value to anyone. Everything from fine art and pianos to classroom and office furniture, lab equipment, athletic equipment, and bunk beds must be listed and valued.

Once the inventory is complete, we will know what can be sold and when. We appreciate your patience in the meantime. If you have questions, please email us at [email protected]

    Visiting Campus

We know that BSC's closure on May 31 makes visiting the Hilltop feel more urgent. And we want to welcome you back. With normal operations continuing for students, we ask all visitors to register ahead of time here

Please consider visiting when events are scheduled and when the Bookstore is open.

And remember: Take nothing away from your visit but your own photographs and memories. BSC strictly prohibits the removal of any tangible items -- signage, plaques, indoor or outdoor furniture or fixtures, equipment, instruments, mementos, memorabilia -- from the campus by anyone at any time.

    Photo Call

For our closing event video on May 23 (see below), we’re looking for photos of you and your BSC people, then and now.

Please email photos that show the lasting relationships you found on the Hilltop – you with friends, favorite students, professors, coaches, and teammates back in the day; photos from weddings, girls’ weekends, or guy trips; with other family members who were/are BSC grads – to [email protected].

We’ll use as many as we can, so send as many as you can by May 1.

    Alumni

The news of BSC’s closure at the end of May has made campus visits feel more urgent to BSC alumni and friends. We are planning closing events for all alumni on Thursday, May 23. Details will be communicated soon, and you will have the opportunity to register ahead of time.

Upcoming BSC Closing events and dates can be found here.

Because the campus will close to all visitors after May 31, visits will need to occur while normal campus operations continue through the end of spring term. To ensure that we are properly staffed to accommodate those visits, all visitors must comply with the following policy.

    1. Register for your visit here. This will alert Campus Police that you are coming, as all visitors must stop at the front gate.

    1. Consider visiting when events are already scheduled. That’s when you are most likely to see faculty and staff.
    • For the calendar of home games for BSC Athletics, click here.
    • The final BSC Music recital is Sunday, April 7, at 4 p.m. in Hill Recital Hall. No tickets are needed, but please register .
    • For tickets to the final BSC Theatre production – The Fantasticks, April 18-21 -- click here.
    • Honors Day is Tuesday, May 7, with convocation at 9 a.m. followed by student presentations throughout the afternoon. A full schedule will be posted soon on the BSC website.

    1. Take nothing from your visit but your own photographs and memories. BSC strictly prohibits the removal of any tangible items – signage, plaques, indoor or outdoor furniture or fixtures, equipment, instruments, mementos, anything – from campus by anyone at any time. There may be an opportunity as the wind-down unfolds for the sale of tangible property owned by the College; if so, we will notify alumni. Unless or until then, please do not remove anything from anywhere on campus.

    • While you’re here, you are welcome to buy lunch in the Caf (hours and daily menu here) and visit the Campus Bookstore (hours here at bottom of page; please note that the Bookstore is closed on Saturday and Sunday).

    1. What about a group visit? If you and your closest ones – a class year, fraternity or sorority, sports team, residence hall pals, or other circle of BSC friends – want to visit as a group, please complete this form ASAP so your visit can be coordinated ahead of time with the Office of Alumni Engagement.

Thank you for understanding the need for this process. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Hilltop.

    Donations

Thanks to our Alumni and friends, Forward Ever Day 2024 surpassed our expectations, bringing in over $326,000 from more than 1,025 donors across all 50 states!
But we shouldn’t be surprised – because that’s how the BSC family rolls.
Gifts to the College will smooth the pathway for the 400 young people who now need to complete their degrees somewhere else.
Your gift will keep our talented, knowledgeable, and empathetic employees in place to help those students, even as those employees work to figure out their own next steps.
To make a gift please click here.
